Defeating Temptation:
Biblical Secrets to Self-Control

Bible-based book on temptation with advice for individuals, couples,
small groups, cell groups and adult Sunday school classes

We all are engaged in a struggle between flesh and Spirit. Regardless of who we are or how old we are, this is true. We may be an alcoholic, be "addicted" to the Internet, watch or read pornography, gossip, gamble, waste time, shoplift, flirt, tell lies, watch too much television, smoke, overspend, get drunk, overeat, cheat on income taxes, engage in sexual sins, experience alcoholism or alcohol abuse, suffer from drug abuse, explode in anger or suffer from other "addictions." Whether our temptations are "minor" or life dominating, one thing is certain---we have them.

You already know how hard it is to resist temptation, living a life of self control, and how discouraging it is to fail again and again. You aren't alone. No one, other than Jesus, has lived a sinless life.

But this doesn't mean the struggle against sin is hopeless, that you might as well give up. When you study this book, you will see that the Bible, God’s Word, provides practical tools to help you in your struggle to overcome the major sins in your life. You will see how to become increasingly self-controlled. Even if your life has seemed completely without self discipline, you can change with God’s help.

"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it" (1 Corinthians 10:13).

A special word of encouragement:If you have pleaded for years for God’s help without growing in self control, your problem may not be a lack of prayer, but rather a lack of knowledge about how to resist temptation. As you study, you will discover that you can grow in self discipline and experience the joy that comes from victory over sin.

Each chapter is interactive, with personal application questions scattered throughout to help you put its biblical advice into practice. The book is comprehensive and detailed, yet easy to useand practical.
